Week #4 - MKTG 4396 - OpenAI GPT Creation

Recently, OpenAI released a new feature that allows you to create custom GPTs to suit whatever your needs are. For this week I have decided to create a custom GPT that can be used to help individuals budget in order to save money, or just to cut back on unnecessary spending. After many hours of experimentation, I can honestly say that this is one of the most incredible things I have experienced with AI to date. This was a pretty similar experience to Poe from last week, but this experience felt like I was given even more freedom than that, which I was not expecting.

To start, I named my GPT Budgeting Helper and used Dall-E 3 to create the image of the piggy bank that you can see above. You can also create a visible description for your GPT, which you can also see above.

Like Poe, you can give your GPT instructions that you want it to follow (you can see mine above, I have since expanded on this but this was one of my first prompts). These instructions can be as detailed as you need them to be as I did not notice any sort of character limitations. Generally speaking, the more detailed that you are, the more accurate your GPT or bot will be, at least in my experience. Additionally, unlike Poe, OpenAI has included a "GPT Builder" (pictured above) located directly inside the GPT creation tools that allows you to give instructions in a different way by chatting with the building tool. I did not try this as I wanted to experiment on my own, however, I can see how useful of a utility this could be, especially if you are uncertain about how to update your instructions.

The GPT that I created allows you to either type in your expenditures or simply upload a picture of your receipts, which it will then read and categorize for you. Above, you can see an example of it breaking down a receipt for a dog bed that I bought from The Home Depot. As you can see, it gives a very detailed breakdown. The first image below shows the categorization from multiple test receipts that I uploaded to the GPT. I have since uploaded a receipt with many more purchases included on it and the GPT still functioned as intended. The GPT also has the ability to export all of the information to an Excel file (second picture below), however, I am still experimenting with a way to have the GPT update the Excel file with information from new receipts. In time, I plan to expand on this idea and maybe release it onto OpenAI's planned app store as I think that could be a useful tool for many people.
